Here is a brief description of what the PTA does at West Mercer:
- Providing enrichment programs for children. The West Mercer PTA spends approximately $100,000 per year funding enrichment programs such as: field trips, playground & PE equipment, assemblies, library books, art, science, and music enrichment, an Artist-in-Residence program, technology purchases, teacher grants, a Math Carnival and Science Fair, a Spring Literacy event, a student Talent Show, the Reflections Art Contest, Fall, Winter, and Spring Family Socials, a Chess Club and after-school Art Club, classroom parties, and much more.
- Providing parenting classes for our community. Our PTA offers parenting education as part of our regular meetings. Additionally, we cooperate with the district-wide PTA Council to sponsor both local and nationally known speakers for parents and teachers.
- Supporting legislation on behalf of children. Our PTA advocates for local issues that affect the children in our community as well as children throughout the state. For example, the top five priorities for the Washington State PTA in 2008 are:
1. K-12 Education Funding
2. Mathematics and Science Education
3. Quality Teaching
4. Student Support Services (Counselors, Librarians, and Nurses)
5. Special Education Funding
- Making the school a better place to learn. Over the years, our PTAs has purchased and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment and supplies to our school. Additionally, we have organized adults and students who have volunteered countless hours in the classroom and in conjunction with programs and activities.
- Enhancing the school experience for students and families. Whether you are new to our school, or a long-time participant, our PTA offers many opportunities for students and parents to make lasting school friendships. From our Welcome Coffee to quarterly Family Socials, to Coffees with the Principal and more, please come join us, meet new friends, and get involved.
