About Our SchoolIsland Park is one of three elementary schools in the Mercer Island School District. It is located in the middle of the island, at 5437 Island Crest Way. Principal Dr. Nancy Loorem leads a staff of 65 who serve approximately 530 students. We are host of the district's English Language Learners (ELL) program, and offer an Extended Resource Room (ERR) for students with special learning needs. Other special programs include Special Education Resource Room, Counseling, LAP (remedial reading), a tuition-based foreign language program, technology integrated classrooms, student council, after school clubs, and before school choir, band and orchestra programs. Island Park is also a designated King County "Green School," an honor given in the spring of 2009 in recognition of our school's lunchroom composting program and newly installed Learning Garden. Island Park uses district adopted curriculum as the foundation
for its instructional program. Individual teachers and/or grade level
teams assess students' needs and adapt instruction as necessary for learning
to occur. Teachers frequently integrate material from several disciplines
to make learning more meaningful for students. On this page, you will find the following information about Island Park Elementary School:
AttendanceAs soon as you know your student will be absent, please call the school Absentee Alert number at 236-3411 or let the Main Office know at 236-3410. As a safety check, after we receive the absence reports from each classroom, we call the home of students who have not been reported absent by a parent or guardian. If your child(ren) is ill to the extent that it will be difficult for him or her to participate in the activities of a normal school day, it is best to keep the child home. We do not have adequate facilities to care for ill children. We recommend that a child with a fever be kept home for 24 hours after a normal temperature is reached. When children become ill at school, the parent or designated person is called to pick them up. It is extremely important to keep the office up to date with any telephone, address or work changes in case of your child’s illness or emergency. The MISD accepts the following as excused absences: illness, medical or dental appointments, bereavement, and unforeseen emergencies. Any other absence must be checked with the principal before the absence. If your child needs to be excused early, for any reason, during the school day, report to the Main Office, not your child’s classroom. Your child will be called to the school office by the school secretary. For security reasons, please follow school check-out procedures. Students must be signed in and out whenever their arrival or departure is not at the normal time.
Lunch "Frequently Asked Questions"Click here to see this month's lunch menu. How much is hot lunch? If my child brings lunch, can he/she purchase
a beverage at school? How does my child buy lunch? What kind of food is served? The Mercer Island School District recently implemented a Wellness Policy and works in conjunction with our food services contractor Chartwell’s to ensure nutritious and delicious food choices each and every day. Students choose from two to three different entrees each day, with a whole grain bagel offered daily as one of the entrée choices. In addition, as a part of the meal, students are encouraged to “load up” at the salad bar which offers a variety of fresh vegetables including green salad and carrots daily, fresh and canned fruit and assorted condiments.
