Homecoming, all school fund raisers, blood drives, food drives, assemblies, and leadership conferences are just a few of the ASB events. Students make decisions about school events, budgets, and clubs at the monthly Student Council Meetings.

Art Club Advisor: Mrs. Jensen Meeting Times: Weekly after school Meeting Place: Room 504 Every student from the beginner to the experienced art enthusiast is welcome to join. We hope to offer a wide variety of fun and challenging art activities ranging from bodycasting to candle making! Everyone should plan to come to the club “dressed for mess.” Guest speakers, field trips, fundraising events and art videos will also be considered as part of the program.
Cheerleaders
Advisor: Traci Brandon Meeting Times: Daily Meeting Place: Gym The Cheerleaders support sports at the High school and also participate in community activities. Throughout the year the squad sponsors activities such as car washes and cheerleading clinics held for boys and girls, ages five through eleven. Cheers, chants, stunts and jumps are taught at these clinics.
Advisor: Larry Bencivengo Meeting Time: Weekly after school Meeting Place: Advisor’s classroom We welcome players of all levels, from the very beginner to the experienced tournament player. Some play just for fun, while others can choose to compete against players from other schools by joining the Interscholastic Chess Team. Interscholastic Chess Matches are held every Wednesday afternoon beginning in November, following fall sports, and ending in February with the WA State Team Finals. This year the club is fundraising to have a Master Level teacher to serve as a coach and to attend tournaments.
Computer Club (VICA)
Advisor: Grant Bower Meeting Times: Thursdays 2:30-4:30 Meeting Place: Room 408 Develop web sites, offer computer support for members of the community, and enter competitions in many different areas at regional, state, and national levels. Come be part of this extraordinary hi tech group. The computer club will be a part of Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA).
CSE (Committee to Save the Earth)
Advisor: Mr. Radow Meeting Times: Mondays, after school Meeting Place: Room 205 Committee to Save the Earth (CSE) is involved in a variety of environmental projects on and off campus. Programs include expanding recycling and composting efforts at MIHS, reducing waste and energy consumption. We also join others in park and trail restoration projects through Mountains to Sound Greenway and EarthCorps. CSE also works together with Island Vision, the Cedar River Watershed on projects to promote sustainability in our city and region.
DEBATE CLUB
Advisor: TBA Meeting: Monday at 3:05 Meeting Place: Room 406 Debate is for students interested in competitive public speaking from dramatic interpretation to discussion of current events. The Lincoln Douglass debate focuses on issues involving values and philosophy. Cross examination debate centers around the national high school topic on U.S. Public Policy. Debaters develop valuable research skills, and self-confidence, as well as, have the opportunity to visit high school and college campuses throughout the state. Debaters need to maintain high academic standing in their classes in order to attend the competitions.
(An Association of Marketing Students) Advisor: Ms. Wiseley Meeting Times: Determined by membership in the fall. Meeting Place: DECA Store & Room 737 DECA members manage and operate the DECA Dock (student store). DECA motivates students to learn! DECA’s motivating power is based on recognizing achievements. Opportunity to participate in a comprehensive program of competency-based competitive activities in their career objective area (Apparel and Accessories, Advertising and Display, Finance and Credit, Food Marketing, General Marketing, Hospitality and Tourism and Entrepreneurship) is available to students. There is also the opportunity in programs of company-sponsored Chapter and individual activities to increase civic consciousness, social intelligence, leadership development and economic understanding. Students have the opportunity to expand their social and academic horizons through attending career development conferences in leadership seminars on the local, district, regional, state and national levels. Opportunities to develop and participate in projects stressing social responsibility and free enterprise concepts which benefit the school, community, state and nation are available to all students. There is also opportunity for personal and professional growth; to develop self-confidence, self-esteem and a sense of personal value, as well as to increase skills in specific career and occupational areas. In addition, students are able to experience the democratic process, first-hand, through DECA political activities at the local, state and national levels.
Drill Team
Advisor: Shannon Verschueren Meeting Place: Gym Meeting Times: During class and other outside meeting times. The Drill Team consists of a total of 28 girls in grades 9 through 12, with 2 captains and 2 lieutenant captains. During summer camp the Drill Team officers participate in a leadership class which helps to develop their leadership skills. Selection for membership is done through a voting process by qualified judges. All students are welcome to try out for the team. Throughout the year, the team performs at all football and basketball games, pep rallies, parades, invitationals, school shows, community events and a state conference/competition in the spring.
Advisor: Melinda Booth Meeting Times: Maximum of three a month Meeting Place: LPR Interact is a Rotary sponsored service club for young people. Made up of member’s age 14-18 or secondary-school age, Interact gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects. Interact clubs perform several projects a year, with one servicing the community and the other furthering international understanding. Along the way, Interact develops their leadership skills and Initiative while meeting new friends.
International Club
Advisor: Susie Brown Web Site: http://teachers.misd.k12.wa.us/hs/sbrown Meeting Times: TBA Meeting Place: TBA Parties, picnics, hiking, touring, concerts, camping, roller skating or just walking and talking; such bi-monthly events make the International Club one of the most active and friendly groups in the school. Goal: To broaden outlook’s by meeting and socializing with people from different countries and to promote world peace. Projects: Traveling to Canada, planning the International Spring Festival & exchanging students with sister schools in Osaka, Japan & Tubing, Germany. Most important—creating a community where everybody knows your name. Method: People enjoying people! Motto: Our unity is our diversity. MIHS has truly gone international. More and more students are exploring cultural differences and learning to appreciate, as well, the many ways that people around the world are alike. One hundred and fifty exchange students from many countries stay with Mercer Island families for 3 days. They socialize and attend classes, give talks, and in a potluck/talent show share such things from their home countries as songs, dances, stories, skits, jokes, customs, food, clothing and music. The guest exchange students are interesting and responsible young men and women who form many friendships and at the week’s end there are many sad goodbyes.
Advisor: Mr. Puchalla Meeting Times: Wed. after school Meeting Place: Room 203 Key Club is a service organization for high school students sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. Students will work at the Compass Center and for Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society among other projects.
Advisor: Mr. Peters Meeting Times: Tuesdays at 3:30 Meeting Place: Room 404 Kids Corps is a club that is open to any high school student interested. We meet once a week after school on Tuesdays to discuss tutoring opportunities and learn more about how to better equip our members to work with children. Parents are always welcome to come to our meetings to talk with leaders and club members. Every prospective tutor must fill out an application, describing there interests, GPA, etc. Once the application is screened and approved, we, the Kids Corps Staff, match the profile of the tutors with the children.
ISLA (YEARBOOK)
Advisor: Ms. Gifford Meeting Times: During class and after school when deadlines approach. Meeting Place: Room 500 The yearbook is just what the name implies. It is a collection of the events and memories of the school year. Dedicated people are a backbone of this book. Many hours outside of the regular classroom are devoted to the layout and distribution of the ISAL. Students who wish to work on the yearbook must complete an application and have permission from the advisor.
Advisor: Mr. DeVogel Meeting Times: During & after school Meeting Place: Radio Rooms KMIH is Mercer Island’s only service radio station. KMIH broadcasts on the air on the FM band at 104.5 MHz. The station prides itself in providing great news, sports, music and other events of interest directly to the community. Radio Club members directly coordinate and maintain all major aspects in the operation of KMIH. This includes broadcasts talent, obtaining music and business management of the station.
Math Club Advisor: Mrs. Schjelderup Meeting Times: Tues. after school Meeting Place: Room 401 Students prepare for competition in national test (to be given in February) and for regional and state competitions (to be given in March and April). Additional topics, speakers or films may also be presented on interest of the students.
MIHS Drama & Dreamstate Productions
Advisor: Mrs. Campbell Meeting Times: During and/or after school Meeting Place: Auditorium MIHS Drama and Dreamstate Productions creates a variety of theatre performances throughout the school year, ranging in style from classical to contemporary, realistic to abstract. Past Dreamstate productions have included classics such a Shakespeare’as Richard III, modern pieces like Fortinbras (a sequel to Hamlet), and the American folk drama, Dark of the Moon. Dreamstate has also produced audience-involved dinner theatres such as Scapino and Murder at the Café Noir. MIHS Drama has brought to the stage the musical, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, the French farce, A Flea In Her Ear, and the post World War I comedy-mystery, 7 Keys To Baldpate. Students must audition for Dreamstate productions. Auditions for general MIHS Drama productions are open to all MIHS students. Drama Improv is a program where students with a passion for improvisation train in the Drama Improv class, then offer cabaret-styled improv performances throughout the school year. An improv club is also available. MI Drama also includes a Theatre Tech program where students learn to build sets, costumes, props, and create lighting and sound for Drama productions. Theatre is a collaborative art form. By participating in Drama Productions, the student can discover and develop his/her creative potential and build skill in communicating with others.
Mercer Hi Times Advisor: Ms. Prescott Meeting Times: 5th period, after school Meeting Place: Room 502 Mercer Island High School’s newspaper, the Mercer Hi Times, prides itself on the accurate coverage of important events and essential functions as an independent voice of student’s opinion. Receiving several first-place awards from the American Scholastic Press Association and the Columbia University Journalists contest in recent years, the Mercer Hi Times is widely recognized as an outstanding high school newspaper. Newspaper students participate in all phases of the production process, including researching, writing, proofing, editing and layout.
Music Department All music programs are extensions of the regular school music classes. Music students are expected to participate in scheduled musical programs as part of their class grade. The following classes are available for students with satisfactory proficiency on a bank or orchestra instrument and/or permission from the instructor: Concert Band: Grade 9 Symphonic Band: Grades 10-12 Wind Ensemble: Grades 10-12 Steel Band: Grades 9-12 Orchestra: Grade 9 Symphonic Orchestra: Grades 10-12 Additional activities which are open to members of the Concert Band, Symphonic Band Wind Ensemble or Orchestra are the Animal Band, Stage Band, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Ensembles and KingCo Solo and Ensemble contests. Choir: For students interested in singing, there is a choir open to grades 9-12, from that group, students may audition for Jazz Choir as a second vocal experience.
Advisor: Mrs. Gifford Meeting Times: First Wed. of the month, both lunches. Meeting Place: Library Presentation Rm The object of this chapter shall be to create and enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership and to encourage the development of character in all students of MIHS. Candidates shall have a minimum accumulative high school scholastic achievement of 3.5 and have completed three semesters of high school. A 3.5 GPA must be maintained or a student will be put on probation for one semester. Only one probationary period is allowed. Activities of the National Honor Society include: Senior Awards Night: Honors graduating seniors for their academic achievements, giving special recognition to those receiving scholarships and other awards. Included are the National Honor Society members and students receiving the Presidential Academic Fitness Awards and Washington State Honors Award. We also select two candidates to represent Mercer Island in competing for a $1000 National Honor Society Scholarship.
Advisors: Mrs. Liranzo/Ms. Gentino Meeting Times: Once every three weeks Meeting Place: R & R Room The Natural Helpers are students and staff who have been identified by the student body as people to whom others turn to for help with personal problems. During a weekend retreat, they receive intensive training in listening, communication, decision making and self care skills. Further training is provided throughout the school year. Natural Helpers are prepared to help in many ways: Some will keep low profiles and work solely among their friends, while others will take a more public role and join in panel discussions, presentations to elementary school classes and the orientation of new students to life at MIHS. Whatever the situation, there will always be a Natural Helper ready to help. Natural Helpers became an important part of the Mercer Island School Community in 1978. Since that time hundreds of schools throughout Washington and many other states have recognized the valuable contributions of the program and have instituted it in their schools.
Pegasus-Literary Magazine Advisor: Ms. Hill Meeting Times: Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 Meeting Place: Room 404 Pegasus is the high school literary magazine, student run publication, issued once a year in the spring. Contributions include works by students and staff in poetry, short story, essay, drama, photography and drawing. Membership on the editorial board, which reads and evaluates the submissions, determining which ones will be published, is voluntary from grades 9-12. The editorial board is expected to attend writings prior to meetings and assist in the publication and sale of the magazine in May. The student editor is selected from this board and provides leadership in publication. The business editor oversees sales and distribution. Students on the board do not need prior experience and training, but should enjoy reading, writing, and be willing to work with a small group. Contributions are accepted and welcomed from all areas of the school.
Senior Service Club Advisors: Mrs.Hallgren/Mr. Cook Meeting Time: First Wed. each month Meeting Place: Library Senior Service Club is an honorary club composed of seniors who have been active in extra-curricular activities during their sophomore and junior years, and who are willing to continue to serve the school in special designated jobs as responsible seniors. To join the club, interested students must apply by the end of junior year for consideration by a selection committee. Other teachers in the school are also eligible to make comments about those applying. The retiring members then provide an initiation party for those selected.
Science Club Advisor: Mr. Bencivengo Meeting Times: Wed. after school Meeting Place: Room 102 Science Club is a fun and exciting way to explore topics in science. Club members work on directed experiences to prepare for the Science Olympiad, a “competitive” event where team members make and launch bottle rockets, build impossible machines, race against other teams using orienteering techniques, and generally have fun while learning new science techniques.
S.A.V.E. (Students Against Violence Everywhere) Advisor: Mrs. Liranzo Meeting Times: After school on Wed. Meeting Place: Room 415 Help stop violence! Create a more peaceful world. Work on projects and activities to promote a peaceful society. SAVE works with Mothers Against Violence, also.
Advisor: Cathy Gentino Meeting Time: After school Meeting Place: R & R rm The Alliance is a club which promotes tolerance, respect and understanding of students of all sexual orientations. Join us for discussion, movies, speakers and awareness raising projects. Our goal is to help make MIHS a safe place for all. Everyone is welcome! There’s always food too!

The High School chapter of Amnesty International is dedicated to supporting the parent organization in its efforts to promote basic human rights through-out the world. Students engage in letter writing campaigns, teach-ins, and peaceful protest to call attention to individuals and groups denied basic rights.
Anime Club Advisor: Rob Wick Meeting Time: 3:15-4:15 Meeting Place: Room 506 The group views and discusses Anime Video’s and C D’s. We hope to include learning how to draw and film our own productions.
Game Club Advisor: Larry Bencivengo Meeting Time: After school Meeting Place: Game Club members gather to enjoy strategy games of all types, including various board games, role-playing games and tabletop miniatures (such as Warhammer and Warhammer 40K). Anyone is welcome. Bring your favorite game or drop in to see what we’re up to. Game Club meets weekly in the fall, and twice a week beginning in the winter.
Advisor: Jan Sayers Meeting Time: Monday during lunch Meeting Place: 1st lunch room 309 2nd lunch room 203 The club meets in order to have open discussions with regard to the conflict in Israel as well as other related current events. The forum is run by Rabbi Yona. Students are encouraged to voice their opinions while being open and respectful of their peers. |
