Superintendent Search Selection

The Mercer Island School District Board of Directors is delighted to announce the selection of Dr. Gary Plano as the new Superintendent of the Mercer Island School District.  The Board voted unanimously on the selection of Dr. Plano at its regular board meeting on March 27th .  School Board President Pat Braman remarked "We are absolutely delighted to have someone with Dr. Plano's skill, intelligence, vision, energy, and compassion leading our district. Dr. Plano began his career in education teaching at Mercer Island High School in 1977.  He is deeply committed to our schools, our staff, our kids and our community." 

Dr. Plano was selected after an extensive national search.  The Board and the community had the opportunity to meet and interview three excellent candidates: Dr. Richard Canfield from Monroe, Connecticut, Ms. Teresa Baldwin from

Washougal, Washington, and Dr. Plano.  Dr. Plano has been working with the Mercer Island School District since 2005 and served as Associate Superintendent of Instructional Services before becoming Interim Superintendent in September 2007. Previously he held administrative and teaching positions in the Mukilteo and Kent School Districts. 

"Dr. Plano has done an exceptional job as Interim Superintendent." stated Janet Frohnmayer, Board Vice President. "He knows our district well and we have been impressed with his deft handling of issues, abiding respect and concern for people and belief in our district's abundant strengths and possibilities, as we work together to prepare students for the 21st century."

"I'm filled with excitement and humility as I begin this new journey of leadership as Superintendent of the Mercer Island School District." said Dr. Plano. "I am continually inspired by our students and staff who remind me why learning has always been a life-long passion."
