2010 Levy Ballot and Pamphlet Confusion

King County ballots and voter pamphlets, recently mailed to registered voters in the Mercer Island School District, have two points of voter confusion:

First, the Ballot:

The General Fund Levy proposition is located on the front page. However, there are two other propositions, the Capital Levy and the Transportation Levy that are printed on the back of the ballot.  Please be sure to turn your ballot over as you consider these measures for the upcoming special election.

Second, the Voter's Pamphlet:

Mercer Island School District propositions have historically not appeared in voter pamphlets due to the extra cost required for this publication - instead we've deferred this money back to the classroom.  (Many other districts also abstain from this practice, including Lake Washington, Issaquah and Bellevue to name a few.)  The cost of the 2006 election to the District was $50, 577.00 without the additional cost of printing voter pamphlet information.

Many voters have contacted the District to express concern that they see a measure from Vashon Island School District on their ballots.  The King County Elections office decides the layout and content of election ballots and pamphlets.  Officials reported that they will often add items that may not pertain to specific areas.  Please contact the King County Elections office if you have additional questions about the ballot/pamphlet.  http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections.aspx

Thanks for your attention.  Please remember to vote by February 9.
